Fans were finally on board with *The Wheel of Time* after its stellar third season, and last month’s action-packed finale had us eager for more. Unfortunately, Amazon has decided not to renew the hit fantasy series for a fourth season, leaving viewers disappointed.
According to *Deadline*, the cancellation followed “lengthy deliberations” among Amazon executives, who appreciated the show’s creative vision. However, the high production costs typical of epic fantasy, combined with a dip in viewership for Season 3, ultimately made renewal unviable.
Based on Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s beloved book series, *The Wheel of Time* was a co-production between Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios. It earned a spot on our list of the [best Prime Video shows](https://example.com), making its cancellation all the more frustrating.
The show had a rocky start—early seasons faced criticism for straying from the source material, alienating some book fans. Despite that, it was a ratings success, becoming Prime Video’s most-watched series premiere of 2021 and one of its top five launches ever.
Season 3, however, seemed to turn things around. It scored an impressive 97% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the series’ highest—and won over audiences too.
“It’s hard to deny that this third season was the biggest and best yet, with a finale that delivered nonstop spectacle, shocking reveals, and outstanding performances,”* wrote my colleague Martin Shore in his [*The Wheel of Time* Season 3 finale review](https://example.com).
Now, Prime Video’s fantasy lineup rests solely on *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*, which has already been renewed for a third season. At least Tolkien fans still have something to look forward to.
